Senior Scientist- Flavor Design + Applications at McCormick

POSITION OVERVIEW

This Senior Scientist will support the Savory Flavor Design and Applications Team through applying and evaluating flavors in a variety of finished products.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leading creative flavor applications and prototype development in meals, crackers, soups, sauces, gravies, and salty snack products, providing excellent flavor applications support for industrial customers
  • Contributing to technically driven business development activities in the Flavor Applications area
  • Facilitating complex projects including planning and leading cross functional project teams, defining and assessing project requirements and designing and managing experiments
  • Building competency within the area of Flavor Applications
  • Providing support as internal expert on projects performed in other Product Development (PD) groups within McCormick 
  • Collecting and interpreting test data
  • Utilizing a strong understanding of consumer & general sensory testing, including PD application
  • Developing model systems for flavor performance evaluation
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with key customers and vendors at all levels
  • Serving as mentor and talent developer for less experienced technical colleagues
  • Researching and assessing new ingredients & technologies for PD improvement
  • Collaborating with outside consultants, and / or with vendors on special projects

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science/Technology, Food Engineering, Chemistry, or related technical field
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the food and/or flavor industry including:
    • at least 3 years of savory flavor applications in a flavor house AND/OR at least 3 years’ savory product development within a consumer products company
  • Strong experience with flavor delivery systems, ingredients and flavors
  • Experience supervising employees and leading teams
  • Experience with consumer and sensory testing, including its application to product development
  • Project management experience with the ability to lead and manage a project team of Flavorists and Application personnel while adhering to deadlines
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong influencing skills
  • Experience effectively collaborating across levels and functions within the organization and with external customers and vendors
  • Ability to interpret scientific data, including sensory and analytical results
  • Experience successfully collaborating with diverse groups of people
  • High degree of ownership and professional commitment
  • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
  • Curiosity and innovative thinking
  • A passionate interest in food
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 15% of the time

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS degree and/or PhD in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Engineering, Chemistry, or related field
  • Experience with thermal processing such as retort and HTST
  • Experience with SAP
  • Experience with product formulary and retrieval systems
  • Culinary interest and/or related training
