Amid the pitches, demos, networking and electric bocce-ball games at Thursday’s Beta City celebration in Port Covington, two people were recognized for their contributions to the Baltimore region’s entrepreneurship and innovation community.
Bob Embry, president of the Abell Foundation, and Christy Wyskiel, who oversees tech transfer at Johns Hopkins University, each received an award from Betamore, the Federal Hill-based incubator and education center for tech and entrepreneurship, Betamore co-sponsored Beta City along with Plank Industries, Technical.ly Baltimore and Startup Maryland. It was held at Plank Industries’ new City Garage space, intended to be a hub for startups doing light manufacturing, a “makerspace” that will allow community members access to industrial-grade tools, and a research center for Under Armour.
